Call of Duty 2 was renounced as one of the most popular titles to date available for the Xbox 360. However as we said back in our review,
Call of Duty 2's multiplayer left much to be desired, and had is difficult to manage. In this article, we debunk Call of Duty 2's multiplayer abilities, and guide you to get the most out of your Live experience.
Setting it Up...
The first thing you’re going to want to do is make sure that you have the Xbox Live (this will be referred to as XBL) is connected to your Xbox, and your account is set up and logged on (to learn how to do this, see our, "Setting up XBL" tutorial).
The next thing you want to do is open your game screen, scroll down to Multiplayer, find XBL, and access it.
You’re going to see two area’s of play, "Player Match" and "Ranked Match." A Player Match is a basic match that counts towards the points in your account, but doesn’t count for your "True Skill Ranking" (Check out our article "True Skill: Defined" for information on this ranking system). A Ranked Match is where you and other members play to upgrade your rank, or level, on Call of Duty 2 (COD2).
While there aren’t any gameplay differences on the two, we’re going to investigate the Player Match sequence. When you access that, it’ll take you to a screen that says, "Quick Match" or "Custom Match." A Quick Match is the most basic setup; you’re automatically placed into a game lobby picked randomly by the first one open. They can lead you to all different types of games you can play on COD2.
Gametypes
If you choose Custom Match, then it’ll take you to a screen that gives you a list of all the different possible matches.
A Death Match is a very simple game; you’re alone with usually 8 other people in a bloodbath ranging all different types of maps and weapons. The objective is to get as many kills as you can in the matter of time or kill score.
A Team Death match is basically the same theory as the Death Match, except you’ve got a team versus another team of players (pretty self explanatory). You can choose one of two sides. The rules are the same as a Death Match, except now you’re no longer alone.
In Capture the Flag, you must defend your own flag while trying to capture the enemies’ flag. You play in teams like in Team Death Match, except the objectives changed, kills no longer matter, but the amount of times you make it from the enemy’s base, capture their flag, and return it to your base.
In "Headquarters", you’re using your radar to locate areas on your map, where you must set up a radio, and establish a base to defend against the enemy. The objective is to set up your headquarters for the longest amount of time, for every second your base is active you get a point. The enemies’ purpose is to eliminate your base, destroying your headquarters. In the end, the team with the most points wins.
The Search and Destroy Match is basically capture the flag, except the objective is to get to the other teams position and plant explosives on it, make sure they go off, and protect your own base from attack. The team with the most points wins.
Upon entering a game, you are asked to choose a side - the Axis or the Allied powers. Upon picking your team, you chose your weapons which include a number of fragmentation grenades and chemical smoke grenades (referred to as Smoke G).

The maps vary, as do the players, so you’ll always have a chance to mix and match what you use. The maps also change in area and style, some maybe very close range, and others very long range; some intermediate, and others really with really tight insurgent warfare.
As for the part of Multiplayer we feel is missing is the ability to play closed games with your friends. It was very disappointing to hear that we were unable to create our own games, and invite our friends. We hope this guide has helped you.
