Bethesda Interview - Peter Hines

Bethesda Interview - Peter Hines

We're here with Peter Hines from Bethesda Softworks today -- He is here to answer some of our questions about the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a game that has been the talk of the community since it made its debut last year along with the announcement of the Xbox 360 launch. Oblivion is set to be released on March 22nd, after much waiting time, along with a counterpart Limited Edition version of the game. Get your hands on that preorder so you can be sure to get this title on launch day!

GXN: Hello Peter, its great to have you here. We'll get right into things here, we're interested how Oblivion on the Xbox 360 will differ from it's predecessors on the Xbox, and its counterpart on the PC?

Peter: Technically speaking, Oblivion is worlds apart from its predecessor(s). The difference between the Xbox and Xbox 360 games are pretty big, and so the resulting jump from Morrowind to Oblivion is equally large. As far as Xbox 360 to PC, the game is the same on both platforms and so the difference between the two really depends on the specs of the PC that is running the game.

GXN: Speaking of graphics, where do you rate the graphics in comparison to the other Xbox 360 games already out now or are in development? What about Morrowind?

Peter: That's not for me to say. After you play the game you can judge for yourself how it stacks up against everyone else. As far as how it compares to Morrowind, as I said above, it's a huge jump. There are so many things we can do with Oblivion that simply weren't an option with Morrowind on the PC or the Xbox. Yes, there is stuff you haven't heard of before, but we'll let you know when we're ready to divulge them.

GXN: Can we expect any expansion packs for Oblivion, like the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions for Morrowind? Will these be downloadable through the Xbox Live Marketplace, or will they have to be purchased individually?

Peter: Thats not something we're prepared to talk about right now.

GXN: Alright, lets move on to more game-specific questions that everyone has been asking about. So far, we've heard of some complaints about the beast races not being able to wear certain helms and boots in Morrowind. Is this the same in Oblivion, or are there special armor sets for them?

Peter: Beast races can wear helms and boots.

GXN: There have been rumors about Holiday content packs that would become available from the Xbox 360 Marketplace. But, more rumors pointed to 'Its been canceled'. Are the rumors true? If so, what were the issues surrounding the cancellation?

Peter: We aren't doing the holidays one. It never made it off the drawing board.

GXN: The lock picking mini-game looks very interesting. But it looks like the picks are more easily broken and lost then in Morrowind. Will this be compensated for by a greater abundance of lock picks in Oblivion?

Peter: For the aspiring thief that shouldn't be a problem.

GXN: There has been some skepticism on the size of the game's towns - fans think this game will be a dungeon crawler compared to Morrowind. Is it true?

Peter: Having played both that isn't my impression at all. It's much bigger, and feels much bigger, moreso than Morrowind ever accomplished.

GXN: There were many side quests in Morrowind. Can you tell us about one from Oblivion that you enjoyed, and wouldn't be too much of a spoiler to share?

Peter: I don't think there's any way to discuss one without spoiling something. You'll have to play the game :).

GXN: Thank you, for your time Peter, it has been a pleasure having you. We certainly hope to see Oblivion become the great Xbox 360 everyone has been talking about.
